GSM and SIM FAQs

George asks…

How do SIM cards work with an unlocked GSM phone?

I am technologically challenged. I am going to France in a week.

A friend purchased an unlocked inexpensive GSM phone from ekit last year and offered me the phone without the SIM card. If I purchase a card in Paris, will I get a French mobile phone number? Will I have to follow ekit's directions on how to call? Will the calls go through ekit or through the SIM card provider?

I realize these may be stupid questions, but I don't know the answers.

Thanks.

Pete answers:

If the phone is unlocked it will simply work with any GSM SIM card that's put in it. Whatever the number is assigned to that number that's the number the phone would have when the SIM is in it.

Nancy asks…

What's the difference between buying a phone without a plan and an unlocked GSM?

Does unlocked GSM mean I can use it with any carrier, and just activate it with my carrier?
My current carrier is Sprint. I'm looking into getting a new phone, but am NOT interested in renewing our two-year agreement (we've had problems with Sprint for years).
I'm looking at the Motorola Razr on the motorola website.
Unlocked GSM

Phones without plans (I don't see Sprint available): http://www.store.motorola.com/mot/en/US/adirect/motorola?cmd=catDisplayStyle&catKey=600681
I currently have an LG VI125, does that have a SIM card? How much would one cost, and would Sprint require a new 2 year contract in order for me to get one?

Pete answers:

Yea if you have an unlocked gsm phone all you have to buy is a sim card from a carrier, put it in, and you're set.

Samsung Galaxy S III (S3) GT-I9300 Unlocked GSM Review And Prices

Samsung Galaxy S 3 (SIII) Unlocked GSM Phone

Yes, this is THE Samsung Galaxy 3S you've been hearing about. It is the S3 (or IIIS as it's technically known). Model # GT  I9300 unlocked GSM.Samsung Galaxy S3 unlocked smartphone This Phone's Features Are So Advanced, They're Almost Scary It Watches You Watching It – Seriously! This is called, "Smart Stay" and it tracks your eyes to see if you're looking at the screen. That's how it knows not to dim the screen or go into standby mode when you're in the middle of something. More like "Smart Scary", am I right? It Knows HOW You Are Holding It – You no longer have to dial. Not because you can voice dial. Phht! That's old news. With the Galaxy, when you have a contact on the screen just put the phone to your ear – and it will call that person. It knows you are ready to dial because it can tell you've placed the phone up by your ear. Takes Your "Practice" Photos For You – Then Picks Best One - Ever take several slightly different shots of something to be sure you're going to have one decent picture when you get home? This monkey loving phone will shoot 20 shots in a burst – then automatically select the best one. Gah!

But Wait There's More Photo/Video Capabilities…Ever think how nice it would be have a still shot while your shooting video? Sure you can do it on editing software (or ask the neighbor kid to do it, in my case). But do you ever really get around to doing that? With the Galaxy you can take pictures while you're filming video.

Beam Your Media To Your Television

Don't ask us how it works, but since a few years ago we paid a lot of extra money to be able to PLUG our Mac into the back of the TV, we think this feature is great. Why? Because we never used that confounded plug. Well once or twice but it was so awkward being tethered to the TV that it just wasn't worth the trouble to share a few photos or try to watch a movie. With this feature you could blast your Netflix account right to your TV. Oh, and did we mention this thing is also a TV remote control. How exactly does that work? We don't know, this isn't that kind of review. But these are the kinds of features that the advancement of technology should be all about, not being able to do cool things – but being able to do cool things easier.

This Galaxy S3 Is A Factory Unlocked World Phone

Unlocked means that it works with any SIM card. It works on the following GSM networks around the world:

  • 2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
  • 3G Network HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100
  • 4G Network Region Based

"It is Quadband?" Buddy, if you're still saying "quad band" you're so 3G. I'll have you know that the new Samsung Galaxy has the newest, latest, greatest band ever invented – the 2100 MHz band. What's so great about the 2100 MHz GSM band? Actually it turns out after consulting Wikipedia that it's just a data band that T-Mobile uses in the U.S. instead of 1900. But no one needs to know that! You can be all like, "This is a quint-band phone. That means it can talk to the Mars Rover." Who's gonna know??

Galaxy 3S Screen Specs

The Galaxy 3S screen size is 4.8 inches and screen resolutions is 1280 x 720.What does this mean? In terms of size, it's bigger than your buddy's new iPhone 4S. And the resolution at 1280p is probably sharper than the new LCD TV you bought six months ago. It's smaller than a iPad and bigger than iPhone. In other words a great size for seeing the apps and functions, watching media or shooting pictures and movies. Finally a sharp picture and a good sized screen in a handheld mobile. What does it mean that the screen is "Super AMOLED"? Notice that "LED" in the end of the acronym? AMOLED is a type of screen technology that mobile phones use now for touchscreens to bring brightness and brilliant colors at low power use so that the battery doesn't get drained quickly. One very cool feature about the "Super" AMOLED screen is that it is MUCH easier to see in bright sunlight.

"According to Samsung, Super AMOLED reflects 5 times less sunlight compared to the first generation AMOLED", says Wikipedia.

So there you have it. You can't argue with Wikipedia, they're never, ever wrong (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia#Accuracy_of_content) .

Grandma's iPhoneSocial Media Sharing And Photo Tagging

It also does a lot of facial recognition stuff and makes it easier to upload your kitten photos. This feature will come into use more when the price comes down and the novelty wears off and everyone and your grandmother has one.

New Galaxy S3 Processor Speed

The Galaxy S III is powered by Samsung's Exynos quad-core 1.4GHz processor, which is based on the the ARM Cortex A9. It has a 4.8-inch super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1280-by-720 pixels, which is housed in a shell that is 8.6 millimeters thick and weighs 133 grams.

What Do The Other Wags Say?

The other lads on the interwebs tell us this phone is faster and lighter than the iPhone and quicker to pick up a signal indoors. Let's face it. iPhones are for the ladies and Android and cool phones are for the fellas. This won't apply across the board so hold off on the angry emails. But yooooouuu know what I'm talking about…

Can You Talk To The Samsung Galaxy 3S Like The iPhone Suri?

*Sigh* If you must. Yes, it can take many, many voice commands and you can play amusing bar games with it by asking it inane questions to hear its smarty pants answers. The gents online also claim it's lighter than the iPhone 3. Have we compared the specs on this? No. Are we going to? No.

Galaxy to Galaxy WiFi Direct And NFC Data Transfer

Deanna Troi not fast as GalaxyThe only other thing we'll leave you with is that you can touch two Samsung Galaxy phones together and they'll transfer data wicked-fast. Like 300 Mbps fast. Furby Almost Cool As Samsung Galaxy S3This is way faster than two Furbies looking at each other locked in by infrared. It's faster than Deanna Troi the empath from Star Trek The Next Generation reading minds. It's faster than… we've already shared way too much.

How Much Is The Galaxy 3S New And Factory Unlocked?

Remember that iPhone app "I Am Rich" that costs thousands of dollars but didn't do anything other than tell everyone you have thousands of dollars to blow? Well this phone is like that but it actually does stuff! It costs a lot of money. Be prepared to shell out to be one of the first to have it. But it will hurt so good when you pay for it like all awesome toys do!

Florida “Chicken Church” Becomes Bizarre Tourist Attraction

Mar 04, 2013

A church has become an internet sensation after hundreds of people have flocked to see the face of a chicken within its walls.

With its large round windows resembling two eyes and roof tiles appearing as a beak, the so-called ‘chicken church’ is attracting an expanding fan club online.

The congregation at the Church by the Sea in Tampa Bay, Florida, say they regularly see passers-by stopping to get a memento of the unusual-looking building.

Its birdlike appearance is completed by the roof that spreads out like red wings.

Threads have appeared online dedicated to the building with hundreds of users wanting to find out more about the ‘Chicken Church’.

Dee Dee Parker, a long term member of the Church by the Sea said the congregation is delighted that the building makes people happy but did not realise that they had become so popular online.

She said: ‘It’s so funny – we were completely unaware that it had become a hit on the internet.

‘We had no idea but I’m glad we can make people smile

‘We see lots of people coming to take pictures of the church.’

The church on Madeira Beach was founded in in 1944 by a group of fishermen.

It’s light up cross has been used as a nautical landmark for the fisherman to guide them back to land.

While it was not intended to look like a chicken, the church’s committee find the similarities highly comical.

The church’s bird-like features are used as a compass to direct sea workers – its wings represent East and West, while its beak and tail symbolise North and South.

Half Moon Club, Jamaica: Environmental Protection And Preservation Awarded

Half Moon Club Jamaica wins environmental awadFebruary 15, 2013

LOS ANGELES, California – Green Globe announced re-certification of the Half Moon Club – a Rock Resort – in Jamaica.

For the past few years, this Caribbean Resort has been dedicated to protect and preserve the environment, incorporating the best possible sustainable practices.

“We are thrilled to receive this mark of distinction as it represents the commitment of our board of directors and management to employ sound environmental practices,” said Aram Zerunian, General Manager at the Half Moon Club Resort, “More importantly, it represents the commitment of our staff to implement and drive the small measures, enforce larger policies and practices and reach out to the community to integrate these positive practices that are all good for us.”

A long-term sustainability management system is in effect at the Half Moon Club Resort, and a dedicated eco-team monitors the progress of green measures, shaping and realizing environmental goals set forth by the property.

Some of Half Moon’s sustainable practices include a towel reuse program, the use of horse manure from the equestrian center to condition soil in nursery and gardens, installation of low-energy light bulbs throughout the resort, and a comprehensive waste management program.

Guests are invited to learn about the history and eco-system of the area, and participate in community activities. The purchasing policy favors local suppliers, and the property’s organic herbal garden provides ingredients for delectable meals offered at the resort’s restaurants.

Half Moon’s eco-friendly operations go hand-in-hand with its community outreach programs, supported by management and staff alike.

The Pack for a Purpose program gives travelers the opportunity to contribute to the needs of less fortunate children in the countries they visit, and Half Moon is partnering with the neighboring all-age town school.

In April 2011, Half Moon initiated the Guest Dollar Donation Program, where guests visiting the property were invited to donate $1 per room, per night to implement a mooring buoy system deployment at the Montego Bay Marine Park Trust.

The trust, which has been operating for over 20 years, is responsible for implementing measures to protect and restore a healthy eco-system in the resort town of Montego Bay.

Green Globe Certification CEO, Guido Bauer, commented: “We are delighted to award re-certification to the Half Moon Club Resort in Jamaica.

This property is mindful of the importance of sustaining the environment to benefit local communities, guests, and future generations. I am very impressed with the resort’s environmental preservation efforts, and the commitment of the team of staff volunteers, headed by the environmental manager.”

“More Polar Bears Than People” Now That’s A July Trip!

Polar bear mother (Ursus maritimus) and twin cubs of the year hunting on the pack ice, Svalbard Archipelago, Arctic NorwayIf you don’t like cruises and/or you prefer tropical destinations, we challenge you to read this post.

Told the wrong way, this trip sounds like a “Must Never Do” item. But then it’s not. When you read it, it becomes a, “Must Do In My Lifetime!” agenda item.

Ice, snow, cold, early morning hours, desolation – sounds terrible if it weren’t so touching.

Amazing images that result in amazing memories. This is what travel is all about, getting away from Normal. Big Time.

Taking the Kids: To the Land of the Arctic Polar Bear

By Eileen Ogintz, Tribune Media Services
It’s 5:30 a.m. and we’re awake, outside and shivering, wearing more layers of clothes than we would on a New England ski trip, though we’re on a cruise in July.

But no one’s complaining aboard the Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic Explorer — not when a polar bear has just been sited on an ice floe just 90 feet from the ship. Did I mention we’re cruising in the Arctic — in the Svalbard archipelago, less than 1,000 miles from the North Pole where there are more polar bears (3,500) than people (2,500).

A polar bear sighting (we’ll see 16 before the week is out), a whale (two enormous blue whales swam and played right by the ship), sea birds (imagine thousands nesting on high cliffs) or walrus (60 of the huge creatures weighing a ton or more lolling right in front of us on a beach) are all reason enough jump out of bed, bolt from lunch, forgo a shower or get off the ship’s treadmill. It’s why the 145 guests have paid thousands of dollars and traveled thousands of miles to cruise through ice.

India Travel Advisories Warn Women Not To Travel Alone In India

Travel advisories warn women not to travel alone in India

Indian protestors after December 2012 rape in New Delhi / AFP photo via straitstimes.com
 Feb 03, 2013

NEW DELHI, India – A 23-year-old South Korean college student, holidaying in India on a tourist visa, reported to police that she was drugged and raped by the son of a hotel owner as she visited the Bandhavgarh National Park in Madhya Pradesh state, central India, reports Dispatch News Desk (DND).

She said she was raped after returning to the hotel from a safari. The incident happened on January 14, but she said she did not have the courage to report it right away. The Hotel Manager, Deepak Vishwakarma, has reportedly confessed that he raped the Korean student on January 14.

The incident comes on the heels of the brutal gang-rape of a student in New Delhi on December 16 last year that has triggered an outpouring of criticism of the police and inadequate safety for women in Indian society. The incident has shaken the core of the country, and it has created ripples which could directly affect the well-built image of India globally. While the tourism industry in India is trying to enhance the country’s image, a high-profile case in Delhi has increased concerns regarding the safety of female travelers to India.

The gang rape of the 23-year-old physiotherapy student in Delhi, who was beaten and raped by 6 men in a moving bus after beating her male companion, has created turbulence among the tourists planning trips to India. The crime against women in India has captured international attention since the Delhi incident. Over 24,000 rape cases were reported in India in 2011.

India Travel Advisories and US Advisories Warn Of Travel In India

Travel advisories by the US and other foreign embassies warn women not to travel alone in India, saying they are “at risk and should exercise vigilance.” According to the Indian Department of Tourism, over the first eleven months of 2012, the country welcomed some 5.9 million visitors to its shores, reflecting year-on-year growth of nearly six percent.

Top Five Sites To See In London

British MuseumIf you’re not planning a trip to London, you might consider it when you read this list of three of the finest – and almost free (donations accepted) – collections of natural artifacts and man-made beauty in the world, all of which are located right in the city of London.

When you read about the collections, and even the descriptions of the buildings themselves, they evoke images of spending days browsing works you’ll won’t be able to describe properly to the folks back home. We’ve been to two of these destinations and can vouch that they’re must-see stops on any London trip.

Learn about a modern museum in a former power station, and a national gallery in a famous neighborhood with some of Europe’s finest painters’ works in their collection.

Then there’s the British Museum. A must-see (or “bucket list”) item if there ever was one. And memorably immortalized in the song sung by Ella Fitzgerald.

Spending time (and little money) in London

Daniel Collins
There have been over 25 million visits to London each year, every year, since 2000. Its position as one of the most visited cities in the world may be due to the varied and entertaining nightlife, the many historical landmarks or the world-famous shows. Whatever the individual reasons for visiting though, the tourist industry in the city is worth approximately £16.6 billion, with the average overnight visitor spending around £90 per day in 2007.

With so many people travelling to the city each year, there needs to be plenty to entertain and fortunately, London is not short of things to do. With as many world-renowned landmarks and buildings, it is a city almost tailor-made for sightseeing.

Daniel then goes on list the top five sites to see in London, read more…

Does “Planning” Take The Fun Out Of Travel For You?

Rick Steves Europe ItineraryWe know that Rick Steves knows about travel and that he knows about Europe.

But when he starts mixing “travel” and “planning” in this article we have to admit we started to get a little turned off!

Isn’t travel supposed to be about breaking free from the routines that drag us down and kill our spirit in daily life? Why bring that bummer of “real life” into our travel escape?!

Well, it’s because like we said, Rick Steves knows travel. So if we hear him out, he does make some good points about why it’s good to add a little structure to your itinerary…

By Rick Steves, Tribune Media Services

During my college years, I traveled to Europe every summer. Back then, I’d start hatching my plans in spring: First I’d determine how much time I could get away for, and then I’d buy a cheap plane ticket to Europe. After that, I’d figure out where I’d actually go.

These days, I’m much more organized. My first move in planning any European trip is to assemble an itinerary. Although it sounds like a chore, it’s actually fun: Filling in the blanks between the flight out and the flight home is one of the most pleasurable parts of trip planning.

A good way to start building an itinerary is to brainstorm a wish list of destinations. It’s OK to dream, but have a good reason for every stop. Don’t visit Casablanca because you liked the movie.

Take the weather into account; for instance…

Common Travel Mistakes People Make Before Leaving

By Wade Knoxville

People love to travel. If given the chance they will gladly grab the opportunity to have a change in scenery. However when traveling to a destination where the tourist has no knowledge of, they make many mistakes and can turn that dream vacation into a round trip into hell.

Avoid These Travel Mistakes, Enjoy A Great Trip

Dress Appropriately – Under this category there are two different mistakes a tourist can make when deciding on their wardrobe for their oversea adventure.

Dress for the Weather – One of the most common mistakes a person can make is their ignorance of how the weather is to where they are traveling. If you aren’t careful and prepared be ready to very uncomfortable. The weather where you live can be completely different to where you might be traveling.

Many places have different levels of cold and the most common reference I can give is the difference of cold between Southern California and a place like Ontario, Canada in the winter season.

To residences in both locations it is both cold to them respectfully but the wardrobe choice for both locations is completely different. In Southern California cold is somewhere around where you can still be comfortable in pair of jeans and a light jacket but over in Canada it can drop below the freezing point where you will need full out snow gear or otherwise be in danger of frostbite.

Dress for the Location – Another common mistake is people dressing too vulgar for the culture of the location. This is more emphasized for women than men but nevertheless it still applies to both genders. One such example is in many countries in Eastern Europe and well as most of the Middle East women aren’t given much of a wardrobe variety and also forced to cover many of their body parts compared to the acceptance of the wardrobe of women and men in American culture.

Understand their Culture – Though the travel industry may try to be understanding, the locals to where you might travel to may not be as forgiving. There are many incidents where a person may accidentally offend a local without ever realizing they may have done so and often times end up in a heated dispute.

Also when added to the negative stereotype that the rest of the world has given to Americans, in general, it just makes it that much worse.

Plan Ahead – Another of the huge travel mistakes that tourist make is that the fact that they don’t plan their vacations enough. They just decide on a vague area to travel to but don’t plan specific destinations they wish to travel to. One of the worst things a person can do is to waste their time and money overseas as they were doing back at home.

A Little Advance Planning Is All It Takes

So to get the most of your time and money it is best to prepare for the trip in advance rather than to just jump in head first without a care in the world.

All in all, before you decide randomly that you need a change in scenery it is best to research where you want to go before you regret that spontaneous decision and want to go back home just as fast as you made the decision to go there in the first place.
