Linda asks…
I have an unlocked iphone from Japan, can I use it with a pre-paid service provider?
The iphone was a gift. I want to use a pay-as-you go plan. Are there any pre-pay phones that use sim cards (GSM)? I’d love to find something like the cricket unlimited everything plan for $55 a month.
Specifically, what no-contract service providers use sim cards?
Pete answers:
Only AT&T and T-Mobile use SIM for GSM/W-CDMA phone in USA, though there’re other MVNOs who sell their SIM but use T-Mobile or AT&T as their carrier.
Sprint, Verizon, Cricket, Virgin Mobile do not use SIMs for their domestic services.
If it is unlocked, you can use T-Mobile (2G GSM only) or AT&T (3G and 2G) prepaid plan.
However, AT&T officially does not allow one to use a prepaid SIM with iPhone. So, it is tricky. And, their prepaid plan is expensive than postpaid one if you use a lot of data.
